In Paide, the Wittenstein Time Center places the whole family into a time machine and flings them through the centuries. Here, even teenagers understand that history can be more than a boring chapter in a textbook, where the past is not just a year, but an experience. The time machine spins in every workshop. No one yells “boring!” ,because the journey through centuries is as exciting as a video game, and no one asks for the WiFi password.

At one point in Toosikannu Nature Resort, a wild landscape unfolds. A soft-moving male red deer appears with its herd between the trees. A phlegmatic buck glances at your car with a bashful look, assessing the brand’s suitability for this woodland. It feels like a real safari, and excited children’s cheers can be heard from the back seat: “Look! He moved his head! He looked at me!” These safaris are at their wildest in the early morning – while some are still dreaming, you can already be face-to-face with a deer at Toosikannu. Since you can stay overnight in the nature park, your adventure begins practically straight from under the covers – half-asleep, and boom, there’s a moose giving you the morning stare.

The suspension bridge in Viljandi

On the high shore of Lake Viljandi stands a castle that may no longer be in its full glory, but its ruins stand as proudly as an old knight refusing to retire. The suspension bridge over the moat sways just enough that even the bravest teenager feels a slight inner shiver. Of course, no one admits their fear. After walking across the wobbly bridge a couple of times, the legs are quite tired from climbing the castle ruins. After that,  the refreshing waters of Lake Viljandi help uplift the mood – the family competition shows who screams like a child first, because the water is quite invigorating.

The last stop in Viljandi – the Kondas Center – does not announce the end of the trip but adds one more vibrant twist. Here, art does not attempt to leave a delicate impression but rather evokes smiles. The exhibitions are so fun and colorful that even children, who usually sigh in museums, want to take another round. Everyone finds that they too could become a famous naïve artist in the future. A wonderful commonality found in a place you didn’t even expect. The kids have been demanding food for a while now. In Viljandi, it doesn’t matter if you’re craving fries or fine dining – you can get both, and often in the very same restaurant.

Põltsamaa Castle also serves a certain time machine function – by displaying screens back in the days of wooden ships and iron wills, when evenings weren’t for Netflix but for watching Mom clatter her knitting needles. At the royal castle, you can peek into the everyday life of the good old days – what people ate, how they played, and how they managed to survive without electricity or fast internet. And since you’re there, it’s worth climbing the castle tower because the view over Põltsamaa’s countryside is so breathtakingly beautiful that even your phone understands for a moment to be TikTok-free.

Adventures continue in Taagepera, where Alice in Wonderland would seem like an ordinary guest child. The sculptures in the castle park are too imaginative to be mere garden decorations. Adults must work hard not to spill their excitement over the edge in this cotton candy realm, while children have no such problems; they simply dash around the park and take pictures. And when evening falls, it’s time to settle into a king-sized, cloud-soft bed at the Wagenküll castle spa – ready to convert a bedtime story into gentle snoring.

Passing by, suddenly, the Mulgi language is heard. Just like a gateway to a new world, the Mulgi Experience Center is a perfect treasure trove of new knowledge. Guessing games, a wishing well, and an exhibition observed from swinging swings bring wisdom to every family member. To conclude, a profound question hangs in the air – could Mulgi porridge be better than ordinary porridge? Spoiler: yes, it certainly is. You can confidently say that the journey has been filled with both taste and meaning.

Tõrva! When the sun shines down from above and drops of sweat trickle down your neck, it naturally pulls you towards Tõrva Veemõnula. Children splash with joy, parents melt stress away like ice cream on a sun lounger, and everyone feels content at once. Pools, saunas, and hot tubs offer pleasure for everyone, and when the waves crash over your head, there’s no need to drive home; you can peacefully stay overnight on the second floor. Relaxation from morning till morning!

Your family returns home with pockets full of memories, not only wiser but also with new stories to share with friends and brag about in front of grandparents. One thing is for sure, in every family photo, only your family is lined up.

Are the suitcases packed?

P.S. Pack the bigger suitcases and bring extra outfits – the full journey from point A to the final stop stretches around 200 kilometers. Not much for a Formula 1 driver, but just right for a family adventure. To catch all the hits, you’ll need two to three days – or one delightfully zippy weekend.
